WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Three incumbents and four challengers are vying for four seats on the New Hanover County School Board.
It’s historical perspective against new ideas. The incumbents are all Republicans: Janice Cavenaugh, Don Hayes and Ed Higgins. The challengers include Republican Bruce Shell and Democrats Tom Gale, Chris Meek and Emma Saunders.
WWAY asked the candidates about many topics, including the $160 million school bond and teacher pay. Watch the video above to see what they had to say.
All the board of education candidates said while the raise the General Assembly gave North Carolina teachers this year is a step in the right direction, it’s not a big enough step.
You can learn more about the candidates Monday night when WWAY and HQR News 91.3fm host a forum. It’s at WHQR studios at 254 N. Front St. in downtown Wilmington from 7-9 p.m.
